Let's talk metrics.

Hey Reader,

There are a lot of metrics we can track within our businesses. Followers, subscribers, likes, shares, opens, clicks, ROI, ROAS, downloads, plays, purchases, abandoned carts, unsubscribes, etc, etc, etc...

But, we're working through the HARMONY framework right now, and HARMONY is focused on building a business that gives us the life we want.

So the metrics I want you to figure out this week are the core metrics that will help you monitor whether the business you're building is leading to that life.

Think "bigger picture" or "long-term" here.

Ask yourself, "If this number improves, will my business and life be closer to what I said I wanted?"

Followers may be a good metric to track when we're discussing whether your Instagram account is growing consistently, but it's likely not a clear indicator of your life getting closer to what you said you wanted.

I'm not saying not to track a metric like follower growth, but right now, that's not the type of metric I want you to think about. We'll get to things like followers, likes, CTR, ROAS, etc, when we get deeper into making decisions. I actually have a framework for that called CLARITY, but we'll worry about that later.

For now, I want you to think about the metrics that are directly tied to building the business and life you want.

Essentially what I want you to be thinking about are the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that show us the business is growing toward where it needs to be in order to fit into the life you want.

Some numbers might be good KPIs for specific projects or revenue channels, and some will never really be all that important. But for right now, just make a list of those core metrics that you believe will allow you to see clearly if things are on track. My guess is, there will be 3-5 max and they are likely things we'll look at yearly, maybe quarterly.

Without knowing your answers to the things we've discussed in Happiness, Alignment, and Revenue, I can't tell you exactly what metrics are key, but most like revenue will be one of them. I can all but promise profit is also one of them as well.

You'll find a few that are an easy 'yes' and a bunch that are either a 'no' or a "maybe, but I don't know."

Right now, just make a list of those easy 'yes' metrics.

Next week we'll get into the O of HARMONY: Optimization.

I hope this helps.

Hey Reader, We've spent the last few weeks talking about HARMONY, the framework I've been developing to help us ask and answer the question, "Does the business I'm building actually fit into the life I want to live?" We've talked about Happiness. We've talked about Alignment. Today I want to talk about something that can make some people a little uncomfortable. I want to talk about money. More specifically, I want to talk about the R in HARMONY: Revenue. I think there's a strange thing that...

Hey Reader, Over the last couple weeks, I've been sharing something I've been working on called HARMONY. It's a framework meant to help us determine if the business we're building actually fits into the life we want to live. Last week, we talked about the H: Happiness. This week, we're moving to the A: Alignment. With Happiness, we asked ourselves, "Do I want more of what this business brings me?" With alignment, we're going to ask "Does this business actually fit the life I want?" The...

Hey Reader, Last week I introduced something I've been working on called HARMONY. It's a framework I've come up with that has helped me answer the question "Does the business I'm building actually fit into the life I want to live?" The first part of HARMONY is "Happiness." First things first - I want to get this out of the way. I know that when we talk about "happiness" we run the risk of very quickly getting very "fluffy" and "rah-rah" sounding. Things like "Do what you love!" and "Follow...
