Hey Reader,
Over the last several weeks, I've been sharing my HARMONY framework with you, which I believe can help us determine if the business we're building actually fits into the life we want to live.
Here's where we're at so far:
- H = Happiness: What gives me energy?
- A = Alignment: Does this fit my life?
- R = Revenue: What does this need to produce?
- M = Metrics: How will I know I'm getting there?
And today, we move to O = Optimization: What can I change to get there more effectively?
Notice I said "more effectively." I did not say "faster."
Optimization is not always about speed. Sometimes this is about the same speed, but with less energy given, or more energy gained.
It's also not always just about more. In HARMONY, it's more often about more of what we actually want.
If one of your core metrics from last week is revenue, you could likely increase that metric by taking on 5 more clients.
But what if one of the things you figured out during the Alignment stage was that you don't want to add more meetings to your calendar?
Adding those 5 new clients might improve one metric while pushing you further from the life you're trying to build.
Optimization is looking at how we can increase that first metric (revenue in this example) without negatively impacting our progress toward that life we said we want.
If we stick with this example, maybe instead of trying to add 5 new coaching clients, we instead consider group coaching? Or raising our prices? Or creating a new, more passive income stream?
In HARMONY, Optimization looks different for each person, each business, each stage of that business, and each stage of your life.
[Continued after this little promo from our friends at Morning Brew]
Sometimes we need to add something.
Sometimes we need to remove something.
Sometimes we need to automate something.
Sometimes we need to delegate something.
Sometimes we just need a small adjustment.
Sometimes we need a complete overhaul.
The goal is to make what we already do...work better.
When we talked about Alignment, I shared that at one point I got so stuck on saying yes to every opportunity our team had that eventually I got burnt out and a whole lot less happy.
I was chasing growth, but that growth was not aligned to the life I wanted my business to give me.
Once I identified that misalignment, I realized I didn't need Teach Better to be bigger.
But I also didn't need it to be smaller, necessarily.
I just needed it to change. I needed us to change how we operated. I needed it to be optimized.
We're still working on that optimization. It's not a quick or easy process. It takes time, lots of adjustments, and a whole bunch of patience.
But I have absolutely noticed the positive impact on my life, and my happiness, as we continue the process. And I believe you will, too.
Your Next Steps
Go back to the metrics you identified last week and pick just ONE of them.
Then ask yourself, "What could I change that would improve this number without pushing me further away from the life I want?"
I don't need you to make that change yet. I just want you to identify an opportunity for some optimization. That's it for now.
Next week, we'll talk about the N in HARMONY: Numbers.
And yes, I realize that we already discussed metrics, which is a bunch of numbers. But I promise, this is different.
I hope this helps.
