Try this.

Hey Reader,
I want you to try something for me. It’s simple, but not easy.

It's not easy because you might feel nervous, or anxious, or maybe even a little embarrassed.

But if you try this…like, seriously try it…I think you’ll find some real value in it.

I want you to reach out to 25 of your LinkedIn connections every week for the next for weeks.

Here’s the catch: I do NOT want you to sell them anything, pitch them anything, or try to turn them into a lead.

All I want you to do is offer to connect with them on Zoom to get to know each other.

Yes, really. That’s it.

I call these “Virtual Cups of Coffee.”

These are not sales appointments. They are relationship-building meetings.

I want you to go into these Virtual Cups of Coffee with absolutely zero expectations. You’re not asking for referrals, you’re not qualifying them as a lead, you’re not even looking to tell them about what you do.

You goal is to learn more about them.

In fact, I want you to try to not talk about yourself at all. Just ask them about themselves, their business or job.

And then just listen…and ask follow up questions…and listen some more.

You’re planting seeds, not generating leads.

Some of these MIGHT become leads down the road. Some MIGHT refer someone to you. And SOME you might not ever speak with again.

But building your network, and more importantly, strengthening that network, will grow your business. Maybe not today, likely not tomorrow, but it will.

So here’s the challenge:

  • Pick a week to start.
  • Block 1 hour per week on your calendar.
    • I suggest a weekday, but not a Monday.
  • Block it off for at least the next 4 weeks
  • Create 4-5 versions of your message to send via DMs.
    • This way you can copy and paste for efficiency without getting dinged by LinkedIn. (it can tell if you’re sending the same message to a bunch of people).
    • I’m including one of mine below, so you can see how short and simple it should be.
  • Use that 1 hour block to send 25 messages each week.
  • Come back to this email and let me know how it goes.

25 messages per week x 4 weeks = 100 messages.

Are all 100 going to book time with you? Absolutely not.

Are all 100 even going to reply? Absolutely not.

You’ll likely get 1-10 cups of coffee out of this. Potentially fewer.

But that’s not the point. Not really. The point is to get yourself into the habit of connecting with people, creating relationships, and growing your network.

If you’re up for the challenge, hit ‘reply’ and let me know with a “CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!”

My Example Direct Message Script:

HI Name, I’m reaching out to see if you’d be interesting in connecting for a “virtual cup of coffee” - A 15 minute Zoom call to get to know each other.
I’d love to connect and learn more about you, what you do, etc.
No strings. No expectations. I’m just trying to be better at utilizing LinkedIn to actually build relationships.
Let me know if you’re interested.
Jeff

I hope this helps.

I appreciate you.

Hey Reader,I saw a post today that essentially said, "1,000 true fans is still great."It was a good sentiment. A positive one. Helping people see that they do not need millions of fans, and do not need to go viral, in order to find success. It was a good post. I support it. But I want you to know that 100 true fans is also great. So is 50 true fans. Want to know a secret? 10 true fans is also great. Where ever you’re at in your journey, focus on serving the right people the right way, right...

Hey Reader,I'm done letting AI write for me. Let me explain. Actually, let me confess. Over the last 6 months or so, I've used AI to write some of the words I put in my newsletters. Actually, I've used it to write a lot. I never got to the point where I had AI write all of my words, but I got pretty close. At first, I was using AI just for brainstorming and occasionally helping me refine some of my rambling text. But then I started to notice myself changing less and less of what it was...

Hey Reader, I apologize, I am a day late this week. I've been dealing with some illness, so I am playing some catch up. But I wanted to share some valuable takeaways from this chat I had with Dani Zacarias from SendOwl. I think you'll find it valuable. There’s a weird phase every EDUpreneur goes through. You’ve got ideas. Maybe a book or a course. Maybe a podcast or a product. Maybe something half-built sitting in your Google Drive that you swear you’ll “finish soon.” And then you get stuck...
