🤯 Did You Know? Welcome emails get higher open rates.

Hey Reader,

Before we jump into this week's topic, could you do me a huge favor? A couple weeks ago, I mentioned the new podcast I am co-hosting. I would be so appreciative if you could leave a 5-star rating on Spotify and/or Apple Podcasts. It helps us get more visibility for the podcast and therefore help more entrepreneurs like you. Thank you in advance!

Ok, now let's get into it...

When's the last time you've thought about your welcome email for new subscribers to your newsletter?

Too many of us let new subscribers sort of find their own way into our world. But the truth is, people want us to guide them and help them know where to go next. They don't want to guess.

This is why your welcome email is one of the most important emails you’ll ever send.

  • 74% of subscribers expect a welcome email immediately after signing up.
  • Welcome emails see 68%+ open rates. Yea...68%.
  • Almost 50% of sales driven by email come from automated welcome emails.

So how do we make sure our welcome emails are pulling their weight?

Ditch the Default - Most email platforms send out a generic welcome email that’s just a signup confirmation. Please don't use this. Set up an automation (sometimes called a sequence or journey). This is the first email they get, so it needs to reflect your brand, your voice, and what new subscribers can expect from you.

Introduce Yourself - People subscribe because they’re interested in you and your content. Give them a quick introduction—who you are, why you started your business, and how you can help them. Even better? Include a short video so they can see and hear from you directly. This is your first opportunity to get that Know, Like, and Trust building going. Don't waste it!

Give Them an Easy Action to Take - One of the key things about email marketing is ensuring the people who subscribe actually get your emails. To ensure your emails make it there, use the welcome email to encourage new subscribers to take action that will let their email provider know your emails are safe and important.

  • Ask a simple question like, “What’s the biggest challenge you’re facing right now?”
  • Ask them for a quick favor - to hit reply and let you know they got the email.

*You probably noticed that I do this with this newsletter - When you signed up the first email asked you to reply with "Got it" so I knew you got the email. If you got here via a free resource, the email asked you to confirm you got the resource. And our welcome sequence includes an email that asks you to reply and share why you subscribed.

All of these are good for ensuring these email reach you, but they also provide me with some good feedback and opportunities to engage with you.

Show Them Around - Think of this as your “content tour.” Let them know what to expect—how often they’ll hear from you, what kind of content you’ll be sending, and any must-know details about your business, products, or services. If you have a community, resource hub, or key content pieces, link them here. A quick video walkthrough can also be a great touch.

Add a Clear Call to Action (CTA) - What do you want them to do next? What are their next steps to get more value? The action that covers both of those things (what you want them to do and what brings them more value) is the right action to request.

Some potential CTAs could be:

  • âś… Reading a key blog post
  • âś… Joining your Facebook group or community
  • âś… Downloading a freebie or watching a training
  • âś… Taking advantage of a new subscriber discount

TIP: Don’t overdo it—one or two clear CTAs are enough.

Don’t Forget the Details - Your welcome email isn’t just about what’s in it—it’s also about how it lands in their inbox. Make sure:

  • Your “From” name and email feel human.
  • Your subject line is inviting and encourages opening. (e.g., “You’re In! Here’s What to Expect” vs. “Welcome to Our Newsletter”).
  • Your preview text is clear and engaging—something like “Crack the code on…” instead of just repeating the subject line.

Your welcome email isn’t just an introduction—it’s your first impression. And in the online world, first impressions matter. Get this right, and you'll set the stage for stronger engagement, trust, and even sales.

I hope this helps

~ Jeff

đź’ˇCONTENT CREATION IDEA

I Wish I Knew This

One of the easiest ways to create content is to teach people what you’ve learned—especially the things you wish someone had told you when you started.

Think about their journey and ask yourself:

  • What’s something that would have saved me time or frustration early on?
  • What’s a myth or misconception I believed that turned out to be wrong?
  • What’s one piece of advice I’d give my past self if I could go back?

Then, turn that reflection into content:

  • A social media post sharing "3 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started"
  • A video or reel breaking down one big lesson you've learned the hard way
  • A newsletter or blog post explaining a key mistake you made and how to avoid it

This type of content is powerful because it’s relatable, valuable, and personal—which makes it super engaging for their audience.

So, what’s one thing you wish you knew when you started? Start there.

Happy creating! 🎉
