Step 5: What to Send After They Opt In

Hey Reader,

So someone downloads your lead magnet. Nice!

Now what?

You could just say thanks, deliver the resource, and disappear for a few weeks…
Or, you could keep the momentum going, build a relationship, and guide them toward your next offer or opportunity.

Let’s go with the second option. Here's how to do it.

Start with a short welcome sequence
This can be 3–5 emails sent over a few days after someone joins your list via downloading your lead magnet.

The goal with this sequence is to:

  • Help them get to know you.
  • Reinforce the value you bring, and the value they got from the lead magnet.
  • Set expectations for future emails - How often you send, what kind of info you share, etc.
  • Invite them to take a next step. This could be downloading another lead magnet, replying to the email with an answer to a question, or even buying (or taking a step closer to buying) whatever your offer is.

A simple welcome sequence might look like this:

Email 1: Deliver the lead magnet

  • Friendly, short, helpful. (We already covered this in Email 4.)
  • Send immediately after they opt-in. It's primary focus is getting them the lead magnet.

Email 2: Who you are + why you do this work

  • Share a little of your story. Keep it human and real. This builds connection fast.
  • Send 1 day after the lead magnet delivery.

Email 3: What they can expect from your emails

  • How often will you email them? What kind of content will you share? Let them know.
  • Send this 1-2 days after email 2.

Email 4: Share a quick win

  • Send a valuable tip, a helpful resource, or a story that connects with their challenges.
  • Prove you're worth staying subscribed to.
  • Send 1-2 days after email 3.

Email 5: Invite them to a next step

  • This could be a paid product or service, a free call, a video, or another great piece of content.
  • Just keep the CTA simple and relevant.
  • Send 1-2 days after email 4

Even if you’re not ready to build out the entire welcome sequence yet, just set one follow-up email to send after the lead magnet delivery email. Even one email can make an impact.

Keep all your emails conversational. Focus on building trust. And always aim to provide value before asking for anything.

It's okay to ask for the sale, but you need to build trust first, last, and always.

That’s it! You can get this lead magnet launched!

Over the last 5 weeks, we have come up with an idea, decided on a format, created our lead magnet, set it up to deliver automatically, and started to build a welcome sequence.

Put it all together and get it out there!

Remember, you're lead magnet isn't just some free thing you give to people...it's the start of a relationship with people.

Now you’ve got the tools to make that relationship meaningful and strategic.

Let me know if you want help brainstorming your welcome sequence or next steps.

You’re doing the work. I see it. Keep going.

I hope this helps.

Hey Reader, So your lead magnet is done. That's awesome. Nice work! Now let’s make sure it actually gets to people when they sign up for it. This is where automation saves you time and keeps things running smoothly behind the scenes. Here’s what to do next: 1. Set up a delivery emailIn your email platform (Kit, Flodesk, Mailchimp, MailerLite, etc.), create a simple email that delivers your lead magnet. Keep it short and friendly. Something like: Hey [First Name], Here’s the...

Hey Reader, I know I usually email you on Thursdays, but I wanted to shoot you a special bonus email this week, to share some takeaways from an event I spoke at last weekend. Last weekend, I was fortunate to get to speak at CEX in Cleveland, which is a 3-day conference for content creators who are entrepreneurs (content entrepreneurs). As a speaker, I got to join a 4-hour mastermind workshop with the growth team at Mighty Networks, network with some incredibly talented entrepreneurs, and...

Hey Reader, You’ve got your topic. You’ve picked your format. Now it’s time to make the thing. (If you're not sure what I'm talking about, check last week's email and come back) This is the part where a lot of people get stuck. They think it has to be perfect. Fancy. Professionally designed. Like it belongs in a museum. It doesn’t. Your lead magnet just needs to solve a real problem in a clear, helpful way. That’s it. Here’s how to create yours without spiraling... Step 1: Write a rough...
