Building Your List? Keep These Things in Mind

Hey Reader,

Let’s be real for a second: if you’re serious about turning your side hustle into something sustainable, building your email list isn’t optional, it’s foundational.

I know I’ve said this before (probably more than once), but here I am saying it again… because it’s that important.

Social media is great for discovery and engagement, but it’s borrowed land. Your followers? Not really yours. But your email list? That’s your house. You make the rules. And when you show up consistently with value in their inbox, magic happens.

So whether you’re starting from scratch, or already seeing some growth, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Create a lead magnet people actually want

Offer something your audience needs, not just what you feel like creating. Think: a checklist, a mini-guide, a swipe file, or even a quick-start video. Solve one specific problem. Keep it simple and actionable.

Make it stupid easy to sign up

Don’t bury your sign-up form six clicks deep. Put it front and center on your homepage, in your link-in-bio, and at the end of every piece of content. Ask for the bare minimum (name + email) and keep the call-to-action clear.

Talk about it…often

Mention your list regularly on social media, in videos, even in your podcast if you have one. People won’t join if they don’t know it exists. And they definitely won’t join if they don’t know what’s in it for them...so tell them!

Be worth subscribing to

If you want to keep people around, show up. Be consistent. Deliver real value. Make it fun. Your list isn’t just a number, it’s a community of people who said, “Yeah, I want to hear more from you.” Honor that.

Building your list doesn’t have to be complicated. But it does require a little intention, a little courage, and a whole lot of follow-through.

I hope this helps.

💡CONTENT CREATION IDEA

Idea: Show the Behind-the-Scenes

People love seeing "how the sausage is made."

Whether you’re building a course, designing a resource, planning a workshop, or testing a new tool, share part (or all) of the process.

It doesn’t have to be polished. In fact, the messier the better. Snap a photo of your sticky notes. Record a quick “thinking out loud” voice memo. Share your screen mid-draft.

Behind-the-scenes content builds connection and trust, and it’s usually way easier to create because you’re already doing the work. Just hit record or snap the pic while you’re doing it.

Happy creating!

Hey Reader, Lately, I’ve been hearing a version of the same question over and over again: “Am I doing the right things?” Usually, it’s followed by something like, “I’ve been showing up. I’m posting. I’m emailing. I’m making offers… but it feels like nothing’s working.” I get it. I’ve been there too. You’re doing “all the things. Or at least the ones you were told matter. But you’re not seeing the results you expected. Here’s what I usually say back: First, you might be doing the right things…...

Hey Reader, We’re a little more than halfway through the year, and if you’re anything like me, your feed is still flooded with lists of the latest trends, marketing must-dos, and new platform hacks. Honestly? Most of it just makes me feel behind. So instead of giving you more to do, let’s try something different. Here are 9 things I think we should all STOP doing. Stop trying to create content for everyone. You’re not for everyone, and that’s a good thing. Your content should speak directly...

Hey Reader, Imposter syndrome is sneaky, right? It’s that voice that whispers, “You’re not ready.” “You don’t know enough.” “Who do you think you are to do this?” It shows up as perfectionism. As procrastination. As over-researching instead of starting. And for creators, educators, and entrepreneurs, it’s pretty common. (Like, annoyingly common.) And look, I could spend the next 500 emails telling you how smart, capable, and creative you are. But here’s the thing: hearing it from someone else...
